Private family journey, four travellers
Begin with recovery instead of sightseeing. After an overnight flight every instinct says make the day count, and that instinct is exactly what ruins day three. Nothing today is about the maples — which is the point. The two days that are need you rested.
See Busan from the water before you see it from the road. The coast is the last part of Korea to turn, so this day is deliberately about water rather than leaves — and it buys the mountain another twenty-four hours.
Take the high ground first. In the first week of November the mountain already holds colour the coast will not have for another week. Foliage runs a week either side of average; if the mountain is behind schedule the day moves — and you are told before you fly, not after you land.
Gyeongju sits inland and a little higher, and turns days ahead of Busan — which is why it is the fourth day and not the first. It is the strongest colour of the six, and placing it here lets it land as reflection rather than obligation. The quietest ten minutes of the journey are at Wolji, and they are at the end on purpose.
End the journey the way it was lived — at the water, without rushing. By now the walk to the beach has stopped being an activity, and that feeling is the entire reason the whole six days stayed in one place.
The quietest ten minutes of the journey, placed at the end on purpose.
Most autumn itineraries pick a week and hope. Colour does not work that way: it comes down the peninsula from the north, and inside any one region it comes down the mountain. High ground turns first; the coast turns last; in the same city the two can sit a week apart. So this journey is not built around a list of temples but around three elevations — Gyeongju inland, Beomeosa on the mountain, Haeundae at sea level — visited in the order they turn. One city, one hotel, one pace, and the maples brought to the party rather than four people driven around a country after them.
